So far, Democrats in Congress -- including House Leader Hakeem Jeffries -- have held firm against Republican attempts to take away food and health care from millions of Americans by imposing so-called "work requirements" on vital programs.
But negotiations still continue. It's important that Democratic leaders know the public is paying attention and wants them to hold firm.
Yesterday, Hakeem Jeffries said, "So-called work requirements are a nonstarter. In 2018, the last time we discussed the farm bill, 145 Republicans explicitly voted against an amendment that would impose so-called work requirements on SNAP recipients, including then-House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy. Voted against it. And so it's entirely unreasonable to think that at this point in time, in the context of a debt ceiling showdown that has been manufactured as part of an effort to avoid a default, that these type of so-called work requirements can be imposed on the American people when there are already significant work requirements that exist under law."
A Democratic senator added that "the reality" is that "we’re talking about children getting food stamps to survive on."
Families USA says that so-called work requirements on Medicaid "would not help move low-income people out of poverty and may actually increase poverty among many."
The Georgetown University Health Policy Institute says, "In late 2018, Arkansas briefly implemented a Medicaid work requirement, resulting in more than 18,000 people losing their health insurance... and didn’t increase employment.
