Nearly seven decades ago today, the U.S. Supreme Court declared segregation unconstitutional and began the end of Jim Crow with their pivotal unanimous ruling on Brown v. Board of Education. This ruling not only opened the doors to integrated classrooms but also served as a clarion call for justice, unity, and the recognition of every American’s right to true equality.
As a voting rights organization committed to defending and strengthening the rights of every Pennsylvanian, we celebrate this joyous anniversary. Yet we must remember it was also the Supreme Court that allowed the evils of segregation in the first place with Plessy v. Ferguson.
John, the law and its interpretation have never been neutral. It’s up to us to fight for courts that rule fairly. With Pennsylvania’s voters selecting a PA Supreme Court Justice and far more judges throughout our state this year, we must take this lesson to heart.
