Do we meet migrants and asylum seekers on the U.S.-Mexico border with guns or blankets? Cruelty or compassion?

Sending an extra 1500 troops instead of much-needed supplies will provide no sustenance, warmth, or shelter to anyone. These families and children pose not a military threat but a humanitarian crisis.

They are fleeing violence and trauma at home, seeking the blessings of safety and freedom. They do not deserve to be greeted at gunpoint at our gates.

President Biden campaigned on a promise of decency and respect toward immigrant families, a striking contrast to the harsh family separation policies of his predecessor. Sign the petition now to remind him to stay true to his promises.

The current crisis is a direct result of U.S. policies that have fomented violence and displacement in Latin America for many years. Whether by sending guns to El Salvador and Guatemala, intervening militarily in Haiti, or placing debilitating sanctions on Venezuela, the U.S. has had its thumb on the scales in every regional struggle.

Now people who must flee the violence in their home countries are being greeted by armed soldiers here, deterring them from seeking needed asylum.

We are better than this! In the choice between cruelty and compassion, we are a nation of immigrants. Our ideals speak of providing safe haven to generations of the tired, the poor, the “huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” We can still be a source of hope for the world.

There is no military solution to the United States’ immigration challenges. We need a system that treats asylum seekers and migrants with dignity and respect.

It is time for us to remind President Biden of the importance of living up to promises made.
