John,
MAGA Republicans are playing politics with people’s lives.
Recently, I voted against a Republican bill that would, just in my home state of Michigan, threaten SNAP food assistance access for 34,000 people ages 50-55, threaten Medicaid access for nearly half a million people, eliminate child care and pre-school for 10,000 kids, repeal clean energy investments, threatening at least 10,000 clean energy and manufacturing jobs, and much more.
Across the country, millions of people would lose access to live-saving programs and services from healthcare to nutrition to housing.
Kevin McCarthy’s right-wing Republican caucus is demanding extreme cuts and increased bureaucratic hurdles in exchange for simply raising the debt limit and allowing the federal government to pay the bills Congress has already approved. Three times, under the former, twice-impeached president, Republican majorities voted to raise the debt limit without preconditions. Now they are threatening to wreck the economy and default on our country’s obligation unless President Biden and Democrats agree to their demands.
We’re fighting back against increased work requirements, harmful cuts, and Republican hostage taking.
Sign now to tell MAGA Republicans: Stop playing politics with people’s lives. Pass a clean debt ceiling increase now!
In my district alone, breaching the debt limit would threaten Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans’ health care for nearly 400,000 people. Social Security payments for more than 100,000 seniors would be delayed. More than 6,500 jobs would be lost. And, the retirement savings of nearly 100,000 people would take a hit, possibly as large as 45%.
We need Congress to pass a clean debt ceiling increase while protecting programs and services relied upon by millions of people across the country. And we know we can do this when the rich and corporations pay their fair share.
Sign now to demand a clean debt ceiling increase before a potential default on or around June 1st.
Together, we’re standing up for the lives and livelihoods of millions of working people, seniors, veterans, and vulnerable communities.
Always serving you,
Rashida
