I am writing to you today with some bad news. Senate Bill 83, the bill that would have defunded universities that teach diversity and inclusion, has passed in the Ohio Senate. This is a huge setback for academic freedom and intellectual diversity in our state.
This bill is a direct attack on the free exchange of ideas on our campuses. It would allow the government to dictate what can and cannot be taught in our universities, which would have a chilling effect on academic freedom and make it more difficult for students to learn about important issues like race and diversity. This bill also attacks the workers at universities. It would severely limit any sort of collective bargaining for university employees at all levels! This would greatly decentivize employment and make it much harder to retain talent. This sort of legislation makes it much harder for Ohio universities to stay competitive nationally and globally. |
