Our Real Justice-endorsed candidate, Matt Dugan, just won the Democratic primary for Allegheny County District Attorney!
This was a great job by Pittsburgh!!! Matt is going to be great, and this is a HUGE victory not only for Allegheny County, but for the national fight for civil rights. Thank you to every local organizer and activist who fought for this. Thank you to our donors, staff, and volunteers at Real Justice that fought for this, too.
For 23 years, Stephen Zappala sat in the DA's office. His tenure was marred by questionable ethics, a troubling lack of transparency, and a chilling disregard for racial justice. From his failure to address wrongful convictions, to his racist plea deals criminalizing Black communities, Zappala's reign was a stark reminder of how much work needed to be done. Matt Dugan's victory marks the dawn of a new era in Allegheny County.
I wish I could leave you with this good news alone, but we have another big race coming up in June to re-elect Parisa Dehghani-Tafti. Conservative and big monied interests are hellbent on getting her out of office. She is currently the Commonwealth's Attorney for Arlington County and the City of Falls Church, but her time there could be limited without a major push now.
