Birdathon Team Spotlight: Let's Celebrate Accessible Birding!
The Five Beaks
The Five Beaks is made up of Louise Edsall (Captain), Bart Edsall, Salay Kamara, Sean Edsall and Rachel Pack. Louise is the Program Administrator for ASNV, has been birding since childhood, and is known affectionately as the family bird nerd. Bart, Louise’s husband and a 20-year veteran of the United States Air Force, is mobility-restricted due to spinal cord injuries but finds joy in birdwatching from home with Louise. Salay Kamara, an employee of Comfort Keepers, has been Bart’s caregiver since October 2020. Sean is Louise’s son and Rachel is his fiancé. Sean is a business manager at Excelity and Rachel is a regulatory specialist for Wetlands Studies and Solutions.
This expanded team is excited to participate and hopes to grow its species count from last year’s count of 62. Their Big Day is on or about Mother’s Day, May 14th. Their Big Day goals include raising awareness of the joys of birdwatching and bird conservation to other mobility-impaired individuals and veterans, discovering new birding locations for the mobility-impaired and finding a solution for Bart to view birds through binoculars, which is a challenge without the use of his hands. One bird they are hoping to see on their Big Day is a Barn Owl. Please support their efforts by making a donation here.
