The Comstock Act is a 150-year-old federal law that threatens medication abortion access on the basis of archaic principles. It has arisen once again as a GOP attack tool.
A Trump-appointed judge has used the dormant law to restrict access to leading abortion drug mifepristone. For over 20 years, people have used mifepristone to safely and effectively end their pregnancies. In fact, studies have shown mifepristone is safer than Tylenol. Yet, the Comstock Act is being used in an attempt to outlaw the mailing of the medication entirely–just one more angle the GOP is taking to strip bodily autonomy.
Congress can, and must, repeal the Comstock Act and not give the GOP an inch in their attempts to ban abortion. Repealing it would not only protect reproductive rights but also demonstrate an unwavering commitment to reproductive health and autonomy.
