Feds, Prioritize Resources; Mayors, Remember Our Values
WASHINGTON, D.C. — As cities around the country work to handle an increase in migrants, their leaders have an opportunity to set a welcoming tone.
At the same time, the federal government should assist these cities, as well as border communities, with resources.
"Republicans and Democrats in Congress should come together to boost resources for local governments and nonprofits that are dealing with the arrival of migrants," said Jennie Murray, President and CEO of the National Immigration Forum.
"These arrivals can pose fiscal and logistical challenges to border towns and destination cities alike, but we know that our communities can rise to the occasion. Mayors have an opportunity to lead an honest but still welcoming conversation, one that is true to our values of compassion and human dignity.
"Congress also should act on legislation that would allow vetted asylum seekers to get work permits more quickly. There’s bipartisan support in Congress for this idea, and it should be a priority."
