Visit to Baglan Primary School

I went on a wonderful visit to Baglan Primary and heard from pupils about the work they’ve being doing as part of their Caribbean to Cymru project, learning about the Windrush generation and the contribution they’ve make to Port Talbot and Britain.

Pupils also sang some of the lovely songs from the concerts they put on during the week.

Deer Technology Visit

Great to visit Deer Technology and hear more about their Limpit Reader device and how it can help reduce water consumption. The device can be retrofitted to meters and remotely take meter reading, it can also help monitor usage and identify leaks.

Funding and support from the Development Bank Wales has been crucial to their success, helping with research and development and prototype creation.

Fundraising for Tŷ Hafan

It was great to kick off fundraising at Morrison's fundraising event for Tŷ Hafan with a sponsored bike ride!

Fantastic to see so many local people turn up to raise money for a very worthy cause.

Doorknocking in Aberavon Ward

Really good door knocking session in Aberavon ward. After 13 years of Tory failure people are crying out for a Labour government that will get us back on our feet and firing on all cylinders!

Thank you to everyone who came out and to all those who took the time to speak with us!

This Month In Parliament

Diabetes UK Drop In

I attended Diabetes UK's Parliamentary drop-in event on behalf of several constituents.

More than 5 million people in the UK are living with diabetes and I heard about how we can make sure everyone has the support they need to live well with the condition.

All Party Parliamentary Group on Immigration

I was very pleased to visit Paris with the All Party Parliamentary Group on Immigration. We met with French MPs and with our excellent Ambassador and her team.

Really useful discussions about how France and Britain can work together to end the dangerous Channel crossings.

Illegal Migration Bill

I continued my work as Shadow Immigration Minister on holding the UK Government to account and representing Labour during the Illegal Migration Bill report stage.

Local Elections

The local election results in England were confirmation that the Labour Party is back and on course to win the next general election.

Brilliant results nationwide for a party that’s back in the business of winning again!

Progressive Britain Conference

On Saturday I was invited to speak at the Progressive Britain conference where I set out:

  • Why Labour's values tell us we must stop the dangerous Channel Crossings.
  • Why Sunak's Bigger Backlog Bill will make this harder.
  • Labour's 5pt plan to fix the broken Tory asylum system.

Media Highlights

The Mirror

The chaos at Dover must be fixed.

But the Tories have resorted to short-changing communities by taking money meant for boosting local jobs & high streets, in a desperate attempt to fix our broken borders.

So much for levelling up.

Sunday Supplement Wales

I recently took part in the BBC’s Sunday Supplement radio show where I spoke about steel.

As the Government’s Bigger Backlog Bill is debated in the Lords, I’ve been setting out how the Home Sec needs to get on with the job, rather than chase headlines with unworkable & expensive gimmicks.

Labour has a 5-point plan to end the channel crossings.

The Mirror

It is staggering that the Prime Minister and Immigration Minister are refusing to correct the public record on their misleading asylum statistics, despite the Stats Regulator, the UK Statistic Authority rebuking their misuse of discredited asylum data.

I’ve asked the Procedure Committee to look into it.

BBC Newsnight

I spoke on BBC Newsnight about asylum claims and how shocking it is that Suella Braverman as Home Secretary criticises her own Government’s policy.
