Dear March for Moms supporter,

We’re only a few weeks into February and what a year it’s already been!

The U.S. continues to rank last in maternal mortality

Just last week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published the first national estimate of maternal mortality since 2007, and the results were sobering. Compared to other wealthy industrialized countries, the United States ranks last in the latest maternal mortality rankings. I’m sure you saw the extensive coverage of the rankings — but, in case you missed it, here’s the U.S. News & World Report article [[link removed]] that includes the perspective of two of our board members — Dr. Neel Shah, OB-GYN and assistant professor at the Harvard School of Medicine and Gene Declerq, a maternal mortality researcher and professor of community health sciences at Boston University School of Public Health. Awareness of this crisis and Gene’s comments about addressing the systemic issues that exist in maternal health care across this country are particularly timely as we’re gearing up for our May rally.

It’s time to act

It is our hope that this year, we will call to action: employers and payers, health systems and professionals, government and Congress — everyone who has a stake — to act. There is no place for moms to be dying from preventable pregnancy-related causes. Our ability to impact change and advance policies that will allow for all families to grow with dignity and support, hinges on our work together — work that could not be more important than in this moment.

And so we MARCH: 2020 Rally

I am so energized by the planning activities we have underway for May and the real opportunity we have to make significant and lasting change through the network of like-minded partners and organizations we’re building. In addition to an influential group who has joined in sponsoring our event including: the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN), Moms Rising, Every Mother Counts, Steward Healthcare and more, we have a terrific agenda filled with dynamic speakers, art, and lively performers. If you haven’t already, join with us [[link removed]] and register today [[link removed]]. And bring out your colleagues, friends and family too! We will be announcing the full line-up in early April.

As always, thanks for your ongoing support and partnership.

With gratitude,

Katie
