John, get your hurricane supplies ready. Because the University of Arizona has released its hurricane season forecast, and they predict it’ll be a big one.

In fact, they find that conditions are optimal this year to have an increase in major hurricanes — storms defined as Cat 3 or above. Meteorologists at the University of Arizona forewarn that 2023 could look similar to 2017: when Harvey, Maria, and Irma wreaked havoc on our shores.

Warmer ocean temperatures provide hurricanes more energy, making their winds stronger. As the entire planet gets warmer, this also reduces pressure disparities, causing hurricanes to move slower and have more time to gain strength. And rising sea levels are escalating storm surge impacts on coastal communities. Climate scientists are warning that hurricanes like this are going to become more and more frequent if we don’t act to slow down and reverse climate change.

We are living with the consequences of climate inaction right now, John. It’s too late to turn back the clock, but it’s not too late to take decisive action to mitigate the future effects of climate change. We need to get serious about protecting communities suffering from these and other disasters.
