** Welcome to my Summer 2023 newsletter
------------------------------------------------------------
This Summer has started in a memorable way with the Coronation Weekend. It was good to see so many people in Victoria Park on the Saturday, even though the weather was typically British for a Bank Holiday weekend. I have also been enjoying the Ashford Unframed 2023 show of murals around the town. Congratulations to all the Borough Councillors who have been elected or re-elected, and I look forward to working with the new administration to enhance and support the Borough.

** Selected as Candidate for Ashford
------------------------------------------------------------
I am pleased and honoured to have been selected as the Conservative candiate for Ashford at the next election. I will continue to stand up for Ashford and the surrounding villages.
** Sevington Lorry Park
------------------------------------------------------------
I met DEFRA Minister Lord Benyon to discuss how the new regime for checking food and animals coming into the country will work at Sevington. I want to ensure any disruption is minimised.
** Parkinson’s UK
------------------------------------------------------------
Parkinson’s is the fastest growing neuro condition in the world. I’m supporting the need for improvement in Parkinson’s care.
** Small Businesses
------------------------------------------------------------
It’s always good to meet local businesses in Ashford, organised by the Federation of Small Business.
** Safer Streets in Kent
------------------------------------------------------------
As part of the Government’s 20,000 new police officers recruited, Kent has seen 532 new officers. In the last 4 years overall crime in Kent is down 12%.
** What’s happening in Parliament?
------------------------------------------------------------
There has been a lot of activity in Parliament over the past couple of months. In March, the Chancellor announced the Budget and that the Government is meeting its targets of halving inflation, growing the economy, and getting debt falling. Measures announced include 30 hours free childcare for every child over the age of 9 months and maintaining the Energy Price Guarantee at £2,500 for a further three months.
The Public Order Act has passed Parliament and gives police powers to better manage and tackle dangerous and highly disruptive tactics used by protestors. The Illegal Migration Bill is making its way through Parliament and will legislate that anybody who enters this country illegally will be swiftly detained and removed back to their home country if it is safe, or a third country such as Rwanda.
In the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee we have recently held evidence sessions on Misinformation and Trusted Voices, and on NFTs and the Blockchain. We are now about to start evidence sessions on Gambling Regulation.

Our Man in Westminster - Otterpool Park ([link removed])
The news in last week’s Kentish Express that planning permission has been granted for the Otterpool Park Development on the former Folkestone Racecourse will itself have an impact on the Ashford area.

Our Man in Westminster - the Ashford Unframed 2023 Festival ([link removed])
One of the unsung heroes of life in Ashford is Chris Dixon, who runs the arts and culture side of the Council’s activities. His latest project is one that can certainly be enjoyed by everyone.

Our Man in Westminster - The Pilgrim’s Hospice ([link removed])
The Pilgrim’s Hospice in Ashford is one of those quietly important institutions that we are lucky to have in the town. I have been in touch with them recently to support them over the pressures they are facing because of energy costs, so it was timely to make a visit.
