Social Security is one of the most popular and successful government programs in the history of the U.S. because it works. Before it was created in 1935, about half of our nation’s seniors were living in poverty. Now, it accounts for at least 50 percent of income for more than half of households headed by someone 65 or older, and keeps more than 26.5 million people from falling below the poverty line.

Rather than increasing taxes for the wealthiest households and corporations, Republicans are quick to propose cuts or eliminate programs that improve the lives of working people. But if we can spend billions developing the failed F-35 fighter jet, we definitely have the money to ensure working people are able to retire with dignity.

We cannot go backwards. Congress must reject any proposals that would cut Social Security benefits or raise the retirement age.

In recent years, we have seen a disturbing trend among Republican politicians—including 2024 presidential hopefuls Nikki Haley and Mike Pence—to propose raising the retirement age for younger generations or introduce "private savings accounts." These proposals are thinly veiled attempts to cut Social Security benefits and divert funds into the pockets of wealthy hedge fund owners.

Social Security is a benefit for hard-working Americans, and any attempts to undermine it will devastate millions of retirees and erode trust in our government's ability to protect its citizens and our hard-earned benefits.
