John,
Republicans in the General Assembly just voted to override my veto and enact their radical abortion ban.
Just one Republican vote would have prevented an override but not a single one stepped up. Now North Carolinians understand fully that Republicans are unified in their attacks against women’s reproductive freedom. I will do everything I can from my executive position to blunt the trauma of this new law.
They did this knowing strong majorities of North Carolinians don’t want right-wing politicians in the exam room with women and their doctors.
I know this is a difficult moment, John. I know that many of us across the state worked hard to fight against this ban. I know that many North Carolinians have been betrayed by their elected leaders, who broke their promises to protect women’s reproductive freedom.
But I also know that right now, they’re counting on you to give up. They think they’ve won this and they’re counting on us all throwing up our hands and giving up.
We can’t afford to do that, John. We WILL stay in this fight — because North Carolinians deserve so much better than the extremist Republican Party dictating our rights.
The best way to solve this is at the ballot box. We absolutely have to break the supermajority in 2024.
