Over 40 million Americans currently have a combined $1.6 trillion in federal student loan debt. This is a huge financial burden that weighs heavily on graduates across the country, and prevents many from seeking higher education at all.

That’s why helping young people prosper has always been a top priority of my work in Congress.

In 2020, I introduced and helped to pass a bill (now law!) that incentivizes employers to support their workers by making employer-provided student loan payments tax-exempt up to $5,250 per year. Since enacted, this policy has enabled employers to better recruit and retain workers, create positive and supportive workplaces, and has helped workers save thousands of dollars each year in student loan debt repayment.

Alleviating the burden of student loan debt makes a direct impact on folks’ everyday lives – and I’ll continue fighting to deliver these kinds of tangible benefits to San Diegans and Americans everywhere.

As we continue tackling the student debt crisis, I want to hear from you on this important issue: What kind of support would help you and your family the most? What does student debt relief mean for you?
