GROUNDED closes?Saturday, May 20th
Only four days left to see Grounded at the WSM before it continues its world tour!
This beautiful exhibit features 15 Native artists from the Great Plains. The images "serve as a visual representation of the worldview, wisdom, and learnings of their ancestors, which is urgently needed today as we reimagine how we live in order to heal our world."
GROUNDED's last day at the WSM is Saturday, May 20th! Come on down to see it before it moves on to its next location.
Pow Wow Dancers of the Wind Rivers
Exhibit Opening June 5
If we look closely at a Pow Wow dancer we can see nuanced footwork, feet raised mid-step, shawls sweeping exquisitely through the air, and a graceful tilt of the arm raising an eagle feather fan.
Photographer Jeb?Schenck does just that?he looks closely to capture powerful images of Pow Wow dancers in Wyoming.
"Photography has provided me with a way to learn about our Native American culture, and the images are the result of my exploration to know my neighbors." - Jeb?Schenck
See this exhibit for yourself starting on Monday, June 5!?
Civic Season, 2023
Saturday, June 17
3 PM - 8:30 PM
Civic Season is a new tradition to discover U.S. history ? and your role in it ? between Juneteenth and July 4th, every year. Hundreds of communities participate, led by Gen Z Fellows and anchored by credible cultural and historical institutions. It is a summertime celebration of who we are as a nation, how we got here, and where we want to go next.
The Wyoming State Museum is hosting TWO Civic Season events on June 17, and we need your help! Anyone interested in Volunteering can reach out to Melisa McChesney at [email protected].
Don't want to volunteer? That's OK! You can attend these awesome events for free. Get the details below.?
Family Day: Oregon Trail
Saturday, June 3
10 AM - 2 PM
Pack your wagon and get prepared for a trip on the Oregon Trail! The Oregon Trail brought 300,000 immigrants out west on a long, risky journey that made its way through Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming, Idaho, and Oregon. The trail left its mark on the west, and you can even see real Oregon Trail wagon ruts in Wyoming today. Join us to learn about the journey and see if you have what it takes to survive the trail yourself!
Family Days are generously sponsored by Scheels in Johnstown, CO. Thanks to their support, these events are always free and open to everyone!
It takes YOUR story to tell the WHOLE story. Join the Wyoming State Museum along with a dozen local and statewide organizations for a summertime celebration of who we are as a nation, how we got here, and where we want to go next. On the main stage you?ll jam out to live music, laugh through an exuberant debate, and hear the stories of historic Wyomingites who inspire one young historian to be an active civic participant in our state.
Enjoy food and treats from local vendors, crafts, and activities to help you discover how your story gives you the power to shape the future. It?s about gathering friends, having some fun, and amplifying our stories, voices, and actions to create a Wyoming we?re all proud of.
You might know that Wyoming is The Equality State, but do you know the history behind it? In 1869 Wyoming made history as the first U.S. territory to give women the right to vote. Fifty-one years later, the nation followed Wyoming?s lead.
Join us for a late night exploration of history with Kylie McCormick, an emerging historian who loves snooping into the past to uncover meaningful stories. Kylie was born and raised in Casper and graduated with a masters degree in History from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2016. You'll grab some pizza and she'll tell you Wyoming?s suffrage story.
