BREAKING FROM CNN: North Carolina Senate overrides governor’s abortion ban veto

North Carolina’s Republican-led legislature just overturned Democratic Governor Roy Cooper’s veto on an EXTREME abortion ban – endangering the health and lives of MILLIONS and undoing decades of Democratic progress.

They rushed this bill through because they know the majority of North Carolinians – and Americans – don’t support abortion bans.

To fight back, we’ll need your help. We need top Democrats from the District of Columbia to sign our letter speaking out against this abortion ban.

Dear North Carolina Republicans,

North Carolinians oppose abortion bans. But today, you’ve opted to ignore the will of the people, including thousands who protested and stood up against this bill.

The entire North Carolina GOP is accountable for this action — for upending the lives, safety, and freedoms of millions of women across North Carolina. Today, you chose to adhere to an extremist agenda and institute legislation that dramatically reduces access to abortion – banning it after 12 weeks of pregnancy, and potentially causing women’s health clinics across the state to shut down.

Eight in ten Americans believe abortion should be legal. And since the hugely unpopular Dobbs decision overturning Roe v. Wade, the people have spoken again and again, voting to preserve access to abortion across the country. In Michigan. In Wisconsin. In Kansas. The GOP has failed to listen every step of the way.

Your actions today have silenced the voices of your constituents and set the clock back on women’s health care. While Gov. Cooper has consistently worked to uphold our fundamental rights, the NC GOP has continuously worked to block that progress and appeal to far-right radicals instead.

So, our message to you as elected officials is this: your dangerous actions endanger health care for millions of North Carolinians. While your position on this issue is WIDELY unpopular, you have still opted to stoke a culture war by attacking the fundamental human rights of North Carolinians. We condemn this abortion ban and stand firmly with Governor Cooper and the people of North Carolina.

Every Republican running for governor in North Carolina would enthusiastically sign this dangerous and extreme abortion ban – and some, like Mark Robinson, would go even further by OUTLAWING exceptions for victims of rape or incest. It’s more important than ever that we defeat Republicans and elect a new Democratic governor in 2024.
