This week, all eyes are on preventing a devastating MAGA-inspired default that would throw millions of people out of work, create economic chaos, increase prices, and stop Social Security checks from going out for the first time in the program’s history.

All that needs to happen to prevent default is for Republicans to stop holding the debt limit hostage. So we’re putting pressure on vulnerable Republican members of Congress, making sure that their constituents know that their representative is threatening default. Next up: Rep. As a reminder: The debt limit just allows the United States to pay bills that Congress has already appropriated. It doesn’t authorize a new penny of spending. The Republican House of Representatives thinks that it can terrorize Joe Biden with the threat of default, allowing House Republicans to enact a MAGA agenda that would close Social Security offices, make it harder for veterans to access their benefits, cut off meals on wheels, and more. If President Biden pays their ransom, Kevin McCarthy, Lauren Boebert, and the rest of the MAGA House will come back for even more next time—which will be just before the next presidential election.

We cannot allow our earned Social Security benefits to be held hostage by MAGA extremists for political gain. We must rally the American people to put pressure on them to drop their hostage taking.
