"So You're Selected for Jury Service"

Jury Room

Whenever one of our residents is selected for jury duty, there are always a few questions about the process. If you visit our Jury Room website at macombgov.org/juryroom, there are answers to the most common questions. For example:

"*Why am I selected?*" -- Jurors are selected randomly based on a list of Macomb County residents who possess a Michigan State Driver?s License and/or Michigan State Identification Card. This process starts over each year so you may be called multiple years in a row.

"*Will you need me on the day indicated?*" -- Each courtroom runs their trial system differently.?Jury services updates information every day for the following day?s activities. You can call (586) 307-3074 the night before your scheduled date of service.?Please make sure it is after 5:00 p.m. when you call. If you are not scheduled to report, this will complete your service for this term.

"*Conflicts, excusals and deferrals*" -- There are only certain reasons that the Jury Room can excuse or exempt a person from service. Most requests will need accompanying documentation. One deferral is granted without the need for any documentation.? Subsequent to that, only certain requests for deferrals will be granted.? You can contact jury services at 586-469-5158.

"*Where do I report?*" -- The jury room is located on the 1st floor of the Macomb County Circuit Court building, 40 North Main Street, Mount Clemens, MI 48043. If you need directions, contact jury services at 586-469-5158.

"*Where do I park?*" -- For a fee, jurors may utilize municipal long-term parking lots throughout downtown Mount Clemens, or the County parking garage adjacent to the County Administration Building (1 South Main Street). Detailed maps and information on the municipal parking lots is available at [link removed]

"*What should I wear?*" -- Business casual is the term of the day while serving as a juror. Please do not wear tee-shirts, shorts, halter-tops, jeans or hats into the courthouse.

"*How long do I have to stay?* "-- The Macomb County Clerk introduced the One Day ? One Trial system in 2005. You should plan on being here from 8 a.m. to approximately 4:30 p.m. However, actual time of dismissal is determined by the needs of the court.? If you are picked for a jury, the judge on the case will provide you with details of when and where to report.

"*What can I bring into the court?* "-- As a courtesy, we provide free Wi-Fi access to jurors in the jury room and throughout the court building. You may bring cell phones, computers and other electronic devices. You will pass through security upon entering so please make sure you do not have any small knives or other items that may be considered a weapon. If you are sent to a courtroom, you will need to turn off all electronic devices.

"*Where should I eat?* "-- Downtown Mount Clemens features many restaurants, retail stores and services (all within walking distance).

"County Clerk Initiates Intern Program"

At a recent Board of Commissioners meeting, Macomb County Clerk Anthony G. Forlini suggested that the County should initiate intern programs for young adults.

?We have a moral responsibility to offer opportunities to high school and college students the chance to gain valuable work experience while continuing their education,? said Clerk Forlini.

Based on his presentation, District 8 Commissioner Antoinette Wallace of Mount Clemens approached Mount Clemens Community School District Assistant Superintendent David Lavender with Clerk Forlini?s idea. The result was two interns were hired in the Clerk?s Office Court Department.

Mount Clemens High School students Jazmine Grundy and Jayla Madden were the first interns to participate in the Clerk?s Office program. Jazmine and Jayla, current seniors, report to the Clerk?s Office four days a week and are learning the basics of the Judicial Court system.

?It?s been very interesting,? said Jazmine. ?It has opened a lot of doors for us and a great opportunity for growth and new challenges.?

?It?s been a great start,? echoed Jayla. ?From not knowing much about the Courts to expanding our horizons. And it?s a great way to end the school day ? a nice little break!?

?I love the fact that both Clerk Forlini, and assistant superintendent Mr. Lavender at Mount Clemens were both so willing to support this internship program,? said Commissioner Wallace. ?These are hard-working kids that see the County Building every single day but never thought that they would be working inside this building. It is giving them an opportunity to see themselves as a part of the workforce that keeps this County moving. It is an eye-opening opportunity for them that will allow them to grow and see themselves in places they never thought they would be before. I just love this for them so much.?
