The House Republicans' immigration proposal is cruel, extreme, and unworkable. That's why I voted no.

• Gut asylum access for people arriving from countries across the world.
• Bar anyone who seeks protection by entering the country between ports of entry from ever being able to obtain asylum, even if they are an unaccompanied child or fleeing from a totalitarian dictatorship.
• Mandate indefinite family detention and the detention of children. 
• And so much more.

I am sick and tired of this cruel madness, John, and I know you are too. The GOP must stop treating immigrants like political footballs and scapegoats for the problems we face as a nation. Passing a bill like this will not open up space for bipartisan compromise — but it WILL continue to normalize xenophobic and hateful rhetoric in our politics.

The progressive proposals introduced by Democrats protect the dignity and human rights of immigrants and asylum seekers. If implemented, they will help build a pathway to citizenship for people who come to our country to build a better life and end our broken, for-profit immigration detention system.

By creating a more humane immigration system that recognizes the horrific conditions that force migrants to flee, we can strengthen our economy, protect human rights, and end this cruel treatment.
