This May,
we're excited to share with you; new educational resources, some of our recent work to combat anti-2SLGBTQI hate, 2SLGBTQI-related legal developments, and more.

IDAHOBIT 2023

The International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia (IDAHOBIT) was created in 2004 to draw attention to the violence and discrimination experienced by 2SLGBTQI people across the globe.

Around the world, societies are bearing witness to an unprecedented and exponential rise in anti-2SLGBTQI, hate-fueled, and gender-critical movements. Unfortunately, Canada has been no exception in this regard. There is a growing reactionary movement in Canada threatening the safety, freedoms, and rights of 2SLGBTQI people, especially those who are Two-Spirit, trans, nonbinary, and/or gender non-conforming.

Egale has put together an IDAHOBIT 2023 webpage with some ways you can combat hate against the 2SLGBTQI community.

CRTC opens public consultations on the removal of Fox News from Canadian television in response to Egale’s application

In early April, Egale Canada published an open letter calling on the Canadian Radio-Television Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) to hold public consultations on the removal of Fox News from the list of non-Canadian stations authorized for broadcast in Canada.

On May 3, the CRTC opened a Part 1 Application (2023-0210-8 – Egale Canada) for the removal of Fox News from that list.

The public can submit comments to the CRTC until June 2, 2023.

Aging with Affirmation

The Aging with Affirmation is a study to examine the social service experiences and needs of older transgender and gender-diverse adults in Canada

In this project, we aim to hear from older trans and gender-diverse older adults, as well as community-based advocates and activists, policymakers and service providers located in Canada. This work is led by a trans researcher, Hannah Kia, who is an Assistant Professor at the University of British Columbia’s School of Social Work, in partnership with Egale Canada.

Legacy Giving

Did you know that 82% of Canadians report that they donate to a charity each year – but currently, only 5% of Canadians have chosen to create a gift to charity in their Will? (CAGP Foundation, 2020).

Legacy giving has the potential to create great, lasting impacts on important causes and the work of charities that are close to your heart, without taking away from your loved ones. In partnership with Will Power – a national public education effort – you can learn more about leaving a gift through your Will.

Through Will Power, you can calculate what your special gift could be and even connect with financial advisors, estate lawyers, or notaries about including a gift to Egale in your Will.

For more information about legacy gifts, to speak with someone at Egale, or to start your Will online today, please visit: egale.ca/bequeath-a-gift/.
