North Carolina Decisions Are a Step Back for Democracy

In a healthy democracy, voters choose their politicians not the other way around. Recently, the North Carolina Supreme Court issued a trio of decisions rolling back fundamental protections against partisan gerrymandering, revoking voting rights for individuals with a felony conviction and reinstating a racially discriminatory voter ID requirement.

Make no mistake, these decisions are a huge step back for democracy. Courts have a vital role in preserving the freedom to vote and ensuring voters are the ones who decide elections, not self-interested politicians. Along with our local partners, CLC will continue to fight for a fairer and more inclusive democracy.

Stock Trade Reform

Voters have a right to know whether officials in the federal government are prioritizing public good or their own personal financial interests. Despite key legislation like the Ethics in Government Act, there has not been any significant progress on increasing public trust or curbing stock ownership.

CLC Urges D.C. Circuit Court to Correct Legal Errors

Elected officials are not as responsive to the will of the people as they should be, largely due to wealthy special interests spending big money to influence our vote and our government to rig the system in their favor. The D.C. Circuit Court should step in and make clear that co-opting a super PAC isn’t a clever way of raising money — it’s a violation of the law.
