Shift Washington

Friends,

State lawmakers will reconvene for a special session TODAY.

The need for this special session is because Democrats failed to pass new laws to ensure that hard drugs would remain illegal after July 1. The need to ensure the illegality of hard drugs came after the State Supreme Court’s so-called “Blake decision” in 2021, a ruling that found the state’s felony drug possession law was unconstitutional.

But rather than pass a very easy, one-word “Blake-fix” two years ago, Democrats looked for ways to achieve their goal of drug legalization. And this session, the Democrats concentrated on issues that they felt were far more important than ensuring hard drugs remain illegal. Of course, they passed more taxes, increased burdensome regulations, and managed to set a record in state spending. They also passed legislation that allows the state to hide minor children from their parents if the child claim to be struggling with gender identity issues.

Reports now indicate that lawmakers have reached a deal ahead of today’s special session. And, like always, we here at Shift WA will be here to inform you of the latest developments.
