Dear John
The foundation for equality for all women and girls is legal equality. No more so than within the family.
And if there isn’t equality in the family - how can there be equality in society? Billions of women and girls are impacted by discriminatory family laws and practices. The fallout is felt in all areas of life. Marriage, inheritance, education, custody and economic opportunities. Delivering equality in the family is a core focus for Equality Now. We are proud founding committee members of The Global Campaign for Equality in Family Law (GCEFL). ([link removed])
Along with UN Women ([link removed]) and leading faith-based, human rights and regional women’s rights organizations, the campaign examines family law as a body of statutes, rules, regulations, court procedures, and customary and uncodified laws and practices that govern relationships within family units. The ultimate goal is equality for all women and men under the law in all matters relating to the family, regardless of religion and culture.
This year for the International Day of Families on May 15th, GCEFL is marking a ‘Week of Action’ to underline the importance of reform in this area. Please see our Take Action page ([link removed]) here to find out how you can get involved this week.
Be in no doubt - unequal family laws is the final barrier we have to break down. And we can’t do it without you.
