I’m not sure if you’ve heard me talk about my mother Marnie before, so I’ll take a second to introduce her now. She taught for 15 years in the New York public school system and worked long hours teaching remedial reading to prisoners at the Brooklyn House of Detention.
I think about my mom often, miss her keenly, and carry the values she instilled in me wherever I go. But she wasn’t just an inspiration to our family — she touched the lives of so many of her students, too. Every day, teachers go above and beyond to prepare Americans for the challenges they’ll face tomorrow. They deserve to be protected by a society that respects their work. But today, teachers and students are struggling to build a future in an education system that’s been deprioritized, underfunded, and inadequately resourced for too long.
As president, I will double federal investment in pre-K and K-12 education while working to equalize educational resources and learning opportunities, ensure every student is mentally and emotionally supported, and reinvigorate civic engagement in our society.
In memory of Marnie,
Tom
