Understanding the Q in LGBTQ

An estimated 6% of non-transgender sexual minority adults in the U.S. identify as queer. Queer people are overwhelmingly cisgender women or genderqueer/nonbinary. They are also younger and more highly educated than other sexual minorities.This is the first study to examine queer identity in a nationally representative sample.

Nearly 17,000 transgender youth at risk of losing access to gender-affirming care

An estimated 16,750 transgender youth in the U.S. ages 13 and older are at risk of being denied gender-affirming medical care due to proposed state bans. Eight U.S. states are currently considering bills to deny gender-affirming care to transgender youth. Most would criminally punish or professionally discipline medical providers who deliver gender-affirming care to minors.

LGBT Discrimination, Policy, and Law 

In the newly released Oxford Research Encyclopedias, Politics, Williams Institute scholars examine the evidence and impact of discrimination against LGBT people in the US. The chapter, “LGBT Discrimination, Subnational Public Policy, and Law in the United States,” explains the patchwork of non-discrimination protections based on sexual orientation or gender identity in employment, housing, and public accommodations and reviews public support for LGBT rights.

Attorneys needed to judge our moot court competition on March 21, 2020

The Williams Institute hosts the only national moot court competition dedicated exclusively to the areas of sexual orientation and gender identity law. This year’s problem will address the constitutionality of laws banning licensed healthcare professionals from using conversion therapy on youth.
 
All judges will be offered one hour of MCLE credit for attending an optional educational session before the competition. Judges will also receive a complimentary ticket to the Williams Institute’s Annual Gala Reception on Friday, April 5, 2019.
