UPDATE | Lawsuit triggered after Biden Administration refuses to overrule FBI’s denial of Freedom of Information Act request

Last Wednesday, WILL filed a federal lawsuit against the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for withholding Nashville shooter Audrey Hale’s manifesto. WILL’s lawsuit was filed in Nashville, Tennessee, on behalf of our client, The Star News Network, its Editor-in-Chief, and a reporter—which filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requesting the manifesto.

🗯 WILL Deputy Counsel, Dan Lennington, stated, “WILL is proud to support the Freedom of the Press. Without it, the Biden Administration would be free to keep the public in the dark about serious matters of public safety, including the tragic March shooting in Nashville.”



🗯 WILL Deputy Counsel, Lucas Vebber, added, “The federal government does not get to pick and choose whether they release information that lawfully belongs to the public. Our efforts are critical to holding our federal government accountable and promoting transparency.”

Recent polling shows that 90% of Wisconsinites support greater healthcare price transparency to better control healthcare costs.

NEW | WILL’s review of reading scores and outdated lesson plans show big changes are needed in Wisconsin

WILL just released a new policy brief and parent resource, Trust the Science? The Use of Outdated Reading Curricula in Wisconsin Schools, this morning. In this brief, we explore the correlation between the use of “Whole Language” lesson plans and lower reading proficiency, controlling for other factors. 

In addition, WILL updated its School Scorecard Dashboard to include school district reading curricula. We believe that giving accurate, easy-to-access information about our school districts is critical to the future of education in Wisconsin.

🗯 WILL Research Director, Will Flanders, stated “Reading is a fundamental skill that every successful citizen must have. Right now, outdated ‘Whole Language’ teaching methods dominate many school curricula, and our findings show reading proficiency suffers because of it. We believe in empowering parents to know what their child is learning and support Wisconsin's efforts to adopt a ‘science-based' curricula.”

NEW | Report on the political contributions of WI teachers and education reform

Last Tuesday, WILL released a policy report, “Chalkboards and Campaign Checks: Political Contributions of Wisconsin Teachers and Education Reform.” By examining the state's campaign finance system, we found that the vast majority of donors who identified themselves as teachers have contributed to Democratic candidates and Democratic-affiliated organizations.

🗯 WILL Research Director, Will Flanders, PhD, said “Teachers have aligned strongly with one political party, and conservatives should place less concern about the public school sector’s political opinions when doing what is best for Wisconsin’s kids. Conservative candidates tip-toeing around school choice should consider the organized effort underway to sway their opinion.”

NEW | WILL testified in favor of regulatory licensing reform

WILL Policy Director, Kyle Koenen, testified in favor of AB 200, 201, 202, and 206 last Wednesday.

These bills go a long way in addressing the backlogged licensing delays from DSPS:

• Providing data that will encourage a culture of performance and execution at DSPS,
• Removing key bureaucratic hurdles that prevent people from entering the workforce in a timelier manner,
• Providing the legislature and public with the info needed to exercise their oversight role—holding the agency accountable.
