The State of the Union is Strong

President Donald Trump delivered his State of the Union speech this week, with a focus on the things that make America strong: our booming economy, our health care system, our education system, our justice system, and the men and women who devote themselves to protecting our country.

You can watch the speech here and read the President’s remarks here

The President listed many, many accomplishments of his administration. His tributes to military families and to victims of terrorism and crime -- and the awarding of the Presidential Medal of Freedom to conservative radio pioneer Rush Limbaugh -- made for an emotional night.

President Trump’s closing words evoked the American optimism of President Ronald Reagan:

America is the place where anything can happen. America is the place where anyone can rise. And here, on this land, on this soil, on this continent, the most incredible dreams come true.

This nation is our canvas, and this country is our masterpiece. We look at tomorrow and see unlimited frontiers just waiting to be explored. Our brightest discoveries are not yet known. Our most thrilling stories are not yet told. Our grandest journeys are not yet made. The American Age, the American Epic, the American adventure has only just begun.

On the other side of the aisle, Republican Jewish Coalition executive director Matt Brooks praised Trump’s address.

“This was the greatest speech of President Trump’s presidency,” he told JNS. “It was a celebration of American exceptionalism and economic renewal.”

Jewish ExponentPhiladelphia Jewish Community and Others React to Trump Peace Plan

Steven L. Friedman, a partner at Duane Morris and a board member of the Republican Jewish Coalition, said that he found the plan to be “realistic” and “practical,” insofar as he believes it would force the Palestinian Authority to prove its good faith. Ultimately, he has little faith in the leadership of the PA — “or the PLO, who are interchangeable, as far as I’m concerned,” he said.

“They have rejected, they have not changed, they will not do anything and unfortunately, this, I’m afraid, will lead to nothing,” Friedman said.

The 2020 Elections and the Jewish Vote

Every election year there is great attention to the question: How will Jews vote, and why?

A JTA article this week notes that Orthodox Jewish voters have moved to the Republican Party in significant numbers in recent decades and looks for reasons for the strong support for President Donald Trump in that segment of the community:

Ultimately, the Republican Party’s support for Israel, conservative social policy and religious liberty might lead Orthodox Jews to overlook Trump’s foibles, Rabbi Avi Shafran, Agudath Israel’s director of public affairs, wrote in an email to JTA.

“While there are some Orthodox Jews who embrace President Trump as a hero, many more appreciate things he’s done that express their values and hopes but at the same time disapprove of his ‘style’ and things he has said and tweeted,” Shafran wrote. “They may still support him, but their support stems from his policies, not his persona. They are voting their interests, not donning MAGA hats.”

And unlike their more liberal counterparts, Orthodox Jews aren’t concerned about Trump’s response to rising anti-Semitism. Seventy-three percent of American Jews overall disapprove of Trump’s handling of anti-Semitism, according to the AJC. But overall, Orthodox Jews see Trump as an ally in the fight against hate.

Ami Magazine found that more than 90% of its respondents trusted Trump on anti-Semitism over Democratic leaders.

In a response op-ed, Hannah Lebovits brings a sociologist’s view to the question, pointing to globalization (including large-scale Jewish tourism to Israel), the increase in the political power of faith-based organizations, and the rise of media outlets oriented toward haredi Jews. She says these trends have had a profound impact on the Orthodox Jewish community and its political perspective.

More Reactions to Trump’s Middle East Plan

Analysts continue to dig into President Donald Trump’s “vision” for a peaceful solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the responses to it.

Josh Hammer, writing at the Los Angeles Jewish Journal, says that Saudi Arabia has proven itself to be more pro-Israel than the Democratic Party. The Saudis have taken a realistic position that recognizes Israel’s utility in stopping Iran’s hegemonic ambitions, while leftists in the US act as “the leading cheerleaders of the Palestinian cause.”

RJC leader Martin Oliner looks optimistically on the President’s plan in an article for the Jewish News Service

RJC Board of Directors member Sander Gerber writes at The Hill that Trump’s plan forces the Palestinians to deal with reality, while still meeting the vital needs of both sides.

The Jerusalem Post reports that the Palestinians would like to bring up a resolution in the Security Council that would condemn the Trump peace plan. If they do, the US would veto it.

Shoshana Bryen writes that it might be understandable when the Arab states have a hard time accepting Israel’s right to exist, but the European Union and UNRWA have no excuse for their rejection of Israel.
