John, right now, forms of direct democracy are under attack across the nation. In Wisconsin, Assembly Bill 245 would " prohibit a county or municipality from holding an advisory referendum."
While this bill not only covers local elections and ways in which citizens seek change, it acts as a laundry list of changes that the GOP majority would like to see across the state. Including county-wide and citywide referendums.
This is a direct attack on the electorate's ability to suggest change, vote on improvements, and voice their support for specific issues.
This is an example of the importance of local elections. The Wisconsin State Assembly has a GOP majority of 63 members, as opposed to the 35 Democratic members. This also exists as a consequence of intense gerrymandering, which Wisconsin is considered to be the most gerrymandered state in the country.
Without dedicated organizers and an informed electorate, bills like this could pass with little to no pushback. But, organizers like those funded and supported by ROCC take the time to speak with their community members and get down to the issues. That is the kind of work we want to empower.
John - consider chipping in to help build ROCC and support rural organizers who are doing the important work of reaching out to their neighbors and communities. [[link removed]]
