Hello,

This week, I outline potential archetypal patterns for your life and why you should be conscious of your thoughts. Then, I discuss artificial intelligence and the future of human civilization with Brian Roemmele, and in a look back through the archives, I revisit the question of how to find a therapist.

Advice

Pay Attention To Your Fantasies

Cain and Abel do not just represent two archetypal types of being. This is two different potential patterns of destiny, and you do not manifest one purely and the other zero. It is the line between good and evil that runs down the human heart. It is exactly the same idea. Maybe you are more like Cain or maybe you are more like Abel, but there is still a little Cain in you no matter how Abel you are. And maybe more than a little. And probably more than a little.

If you watch your fantasies, which I would very much recommend, you will find that they show you dark things about you that will shock you if you allow yourself to be conscious of what you are thinking. When you are having an argument with someone — especially someone you love — is a good time to just watch the pictures that flash in the back of your mind.

That is part of coming into contact with what Carl Jung called “the shadow,” and the shadow is the manifestation of Cain. That is a perfect way of thinking about it. Jung was not someone you mess around with lightly. He said the human shadow has roots that reach all the way to hell, and Jung meant that. That is no metaphor for him. He might not have meant it in the same way that a Fundamentalist Christian from the Southern U.S. might mean it, but I would say that Jung meant it in a way that is far more terrifying — and also far more true.

Having a vision for your life allows you to set your path forward and put it in motion. Part of loving yourself is figuring out what you could and will become. The Psychology of the Flood

Here is a flood idea: There is this idea that a judgmental being will flood you out if you continue on your wayward ways. It is one of the examples of Jehovah being a little on the harsh side in the Old Testament, not something that modern people really approve of so much because we like our gods sort of domesticated — let’s put it that way. Unfortunately, that is not how it tends to work.

ChatGPT and the Dawn of Computerized Hyper-Intelligence | EP 357

Brian Roemmele and I discuss the future of human civilization, a world of human androids operating alongside artificial intelligence with applications that George Orwell could not have imagined in his wildest stories. Whether the future will be a dystopian nightmare devoid of art, or a hyper-charged intellectual utopia is yet to be seen, but the markers are clear … everything is already changing.

How To Find A Therapist

Several years ago, someone asked me how to find a “sane, sound” therapist and if temperament and compatibility matter in a therapist-patient relationship.
