John,
If you’ve seen the news, then you’ve probably heard a lot about the debt ceiling situation. I wanted to share what all of this means, and how it would impact Vermonters.
Raising the debt limit simply means the government would be able to pay the bills it has already accrued and continue providing services like health care, Social Security payments, and food stamps to working class families.
Congressional Republicans’ Default on America Act, their so-called solution to the debt ceiling situation, demands that heartless and massive cuts be made to key government programs in exchange for raising the debt limit. Here’s a snapshot of the impact this bill would have:
- 47,000 Vermonters would be at risk of losing Medicaid coverage.
- At least 700 Vermont kids would lose preschool or child care.
- Health benefits for 266,000 Vermonters would be put at risk.
- 4,000 Vermont families would lose access to nutrition food assistance programs.
- 10 rail safety inspection days would be lost for our public transportation.
I'm fighting to make sure America pays its bills and continues to invest in the priorities and programs that Vermonters rely on. Now more than ever, I need your help to power my fight — will you chip in any amount before my mid-month deadline tonight to support me as I fight to push back against MAGA Republicans and their dangerous agenda in Washington?

Republicans are ready to drive America off of an economic cliff for an act of political showmanship. After all, Republicans voted three separate times to raise the debt ceiling under President Trump, and America has never in history defaulted on its debt.
The GOP’s attempt to force America into default will have real consequences for Vermont families. I’m fighting to make sure that doesn’t happen – and I need your support.
Before our mid-month deadline tonight, donate anything you can to stand with me and fight back against the GOP’s reckless agenda.
