John,
For forty years I’ve been up close and personal with people who were experiencing hard times. The difference between then and now, however, is that the anxiety which used to be the exception rather than the rule now seems to be the rule rather than the exception.
Too many people’s lives are falling apart today. Too many people are going through difficult times. Too many people are having a hard time holding it together.
I’ve realized that we can't overestimate the role of economic anxiety in causing so much of that distress. It’s now baked into the cake in America that some level of economic struggle is the reality for a majority of our citizens. What was different in the first half of my career? In the first half of my career America still had a thriving middle class.
That’s why we need fundamental economic reform in America. We need more than a piecemeal, incremental approach to repairing what’s broken. We need a new vision and a new beginning. We need an economic u-turn.
This Thursday I will unveil my plans for a 21st Century Economic Bill of Rights, in a speech live-streamed to our website from the National Press Club in Washington D.C.

Shortly before his death, President Franklin Roosevelt wrote these words:
“We cannot be content, no matter how high that general standard of living may be, if some fraction of our people — whether it be one-third or one-fifth or one-tenth — is ill-fed, ill-clothed, ill-housed, and insecure.”
Nearly 80 years later, it’s time to bring back those words as well as the solution Roosevelt prescribed. He wanted an Economic Bill of Rights, and so do I.
We can begin a new chapter in American history, with a goal of economic security for all Americans. Poll after poll shows that Americans feel this country is moving in the wrong direction economically – and they are correct.
When I am president this will change. Please join me Thursday and hear more about my plans.
