Hi there,
Thank you so much to everyone who turned out to help celebrate 15 years of GGWash [[link removed]] . Our thoughts are inspired, our hearts are full, and we already can't wait to gather together again.
There is so much happening this month, from meet-ups, to webinars, to chances to weigh-in on the future of our region, it *may* be hard to do it all.
Upcoming Events
Ward 1.5 Meetup [[link removed]]
Sunday, May 21, 3:00 - 5:00 pm
Civic engagement can be both rewarding and frustrating, but it should never be lonely. If you're looking to connect with other folks--especially in Wards 1 and 2--who think neighbors are nicer than neighborhood character and that cities should be for people, not for cars, this month's meet-up will be held at Grand Duchess. Sign up [[link removed]] to receive updates.
Come hang out with us at Denizens in Silver Spring [[link removed]]
Wednesday, May 25, 5:30 - 7:30 pm
Can you believe it's been a year since our last meetup in Montgomery County? Let's fix that. Join us outside at Denizens Brewing Company in Silver Spring for happy hour and we can celebrate our new Planning Board appointments (or not, depending on how successful our endorsements are!) We'll be under the big tent, so this goes on rain or shine.
Webinar: What premium grocery stores teach us about the devaluation of Black communities [[link removed]]
Wednesday, May 31, 12:00 - 1:00 pm
In part of a broader national trend of under-investment in Black neighborhoods, new research finds that despite having the highest concentration of high-income majority-Black neighborhoods in the US, premium grocers in the Washington region are still more likely to locate in neighborhoods with few Black residents. Join us for a discussion with local experts about the report's findings, what it tells us about the persistence of structural racism in urban development and patterns of investment, and the implications for Black-majority communities in the Washington region, especially Prince George's County.
Save the date: Celebrate queer urbanists with GGWash at Pride 2023 [[link removed]]
Saturday, June 10, 2:30 - 7:30 pm
Queer people have made so many contributions to equitable urbanism in our region and they should be celebrated! March with GGWash in the Capital Pride Parade on Saturday, June 10 for a family friendly Pride celebration.

Support our endorsee's in Montgomery County [[link removed]]
This month, the Montgomery County Council will appoint two new Planning Board members, including a new chair. Now more than ever, we need a board who can tackle our housing crisis, pursue racial equity, strengthen our economy, and protect our environment. To make that happen, Greater Greater Washington endorses [[link removed]] former County Councilmember Hans Riemer for chair and urban planner Upneet Singh Atwal for commissioner. The County Council will vote on Planning Board appointments this month, and they need to hear from us!
Submit your feedback on WMATA's Better Bus initiative and network redesign [[link removed]]
Better Bus is Metro's overarching initiative to improve Metrobus for the region. As part of this initiative, Metro is launching a network redesign with the aim of creating a Better Bus network that is fast, frequent, reliable, and easier to understand, and they want your feedback. Submit your comments now before the survey closes in June.

In 2022, local journalist Abby Higgins worked with GGWash to unpack the relationship between residential segregation and school boundaries. Earlier this month, Abby appeared as a guest on City Cast DC to talk more about her research.
[[link removed]] Thank you so much for all you do for our region! It was so wonderful to celebrate with you all at the Soirée [[link removed]] last month. Hope to see you at an event soon.
