John, I know that political news right now is exceedingly difficult to keep up with. I want to take a minute to tell you about something that may have been lost below the bigger headlines, because it has serious implications for the values we hold dear as Americans.

A few months ago, the current administration proposed a "public charge" rule that makes permanent residency impossible for many immigrants who use public benefits such as Medicaid, food stamps, or housing assistance. This is an offensive wealth test designed to limit lawful immigration -- but just last week, the Supreme Court approved the rule.

I was three years old when my family and I immigrated from India to the United States. My mother and father risked everything to come to America because they, like so many, were in pursuit of the American dream. We left India on a one-way ticket with only 7 dollars to our name, but my parents believed if you worked hard and lived by the rules of democracy, you could be successful no matter where you came from.

But, there were no guarantees that we wouldn't have needed public benefits along the way. If this new rule had been in place then, we would not be here today.

America is the only home I've ever known. It's allowed my family and me such incredible opportunities to work hard and succeed. And I'm heartbroken, because I see myself in so many of the immigrant children whose families could now be denied citizenship.

This administration's rule betrays our values, and we need to show we are better than this. We need diverse voices in Congress to speak out against xenophobic policies and promote a more inclusive, welcoming America.

If you believe in the true promise of the American Dream, please make a contribution to my campaign: [link removed]

The America I know and love doesn't tell working-class families they're unworthy. It doesn't devalue public aid to those in need. The America I know lifts people up and welcomes those who've come here to be part of our collective journey. Together, let's fight to show that we're still that America.

Thank you,

Hiral
