John, the monster who choked Jordan Neely to death was charged with manslaughter last week.
This is proof that elections and protests matter.
Had we not worked hard here at Real Justice to elect Alvin Bragg as DA of Manhattan and protested citywide, I’m convinced Penny would’ve walked on this.
Let me try to explain something important that has everything to do with this case.
Justice from institutions and elected officials on the INSIDE will NEVER be as swift or as serious as those of us fighting for change on the OUTSIDE.
But when we are able to play both the inside AND outside game, we get results.
It’s always going to be up to us to fight for more, to demand more.
That’s what we are doing here at Real Justice — electing justice-minded prosecutors on the inside who can support this movement on the outside.
But here’s the thing, John, and I’m going to be very honest with you: We have some critical elections in Pennsylvania and Virginia coming up over the next few weeks that we need more manpower behind.
Jordan Neely needed help.
He needed love, food, water, healthcare, mental health services, and housing.
So many people and systems failed him. Breaks my heart.
It reminds me all too well of a case out of San Francisco — but the process has been entirely different solely due to who is in the District Attorney's office there.
A Walgreens security guard KILLED a Black trans community activist named Banko Brown. Banko was unhoused and it was possible that he was shoplifting when the security guard had ALREADY escorted him out of the store. Then the guard went back inside before deciding to come back outside and shoot Banko to death.
The guard was originally charged with homicide, rightfully so, but then SF DA Brooke Jenkins DROPPED THE CHARGES against the murderer.
It makes my blood boil.
And Brooke is only now claiming after public pressure that the investigation is ongoing, even though she previously wrote it off as self-defense.
I know, without a shadow of a doubt, that if Real Justice DA Chesa Boudin was still in office, that security guard would have already been charged, just like Daniel Penny was in New York by DA Alvin Bragg.
Even though people are protesting on the streets of SF, because the police union and GOP mega-donors successfully removed Chesa from office and we no longer have a DA on the INSIDE, it will be much harder to get accountability here.
That is why we are working SO HARD to elect DAs all across the country so that when people on the OUTSIDE protest to demand justice and accountability, our bold champions on the INSIDE can respond with actions that get real results — like Bragg holding Jordan’s murderer accountable.
And we need your help to build our movement for justice and accountability.
Love and appreciate you,
Shaun
