May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and for our new, year-long national public service ad (PSA) campaign, we’re encouraging people to Talk Away the Dark by recognizing the warning signs for suicide and knowing how to start an open and honest conversation with someone they care about, and connect those at risk to help.
You can TUNE IN TODAY on NBC at 3:45 p.m. ET for an interview with AFSP’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. Christine Yu Moutier and the debut of the centerpiece of the campaign: a short film by award winning director Vincent René-Lortie, produced in collaboration with ad agency TBWA\CHIAT\DAY, who donated their time and resources to support the campaign development. The film sensitively portrays a series of conversations between a middle-aged man and his adult daughter, as she notices several of the warning signs for suicide – such as giving away prized possessions, isolating, and feeling like a burden – as her father is visually pulled progressively into the shadows. The film culminates with the daughter gently touching her father’s hand, and bringing him back from the shadows and into the light.
The full film is also now available to watch on our Talk Away the Dark web page, along with educational resources on the warning signs for suicide, and freshly designed #RealConvo Guides, showing how anyone can have a confident, caring conversation with someone they care about. The film, along with the #RealConvo Guides, has been captioned and translated in Spanish.
We also hope you’ll tune in tomorrow, Tuesday May 16 at 4 p.m. ET for a special livestream event on Instagram hosted by AFSP Vice President of Mission Engagement Dr. Doreen Marshall with guests mental health expert [Kier Gaines]([link removed]), and mental health activist [Kim Saira]([link removed]) who will discuss the “Talk Away The Dark” film, and best practices and takeaways for having important mental health conversations with your loved ones. [Tune in for the livestream.]([link removed])
We encourage you to watch (and share!) the film and the Instagram Live conversation with the people you care about, and help us #TalkAwaytheDark.
