Gaps In Access To Opioid Use Disorder Treatment For Medicare
Beneficiaries

Courtney R. Yarbrough

While they have received less attention than their younger counterparts,
older adults who use Medicare have experienced large increases in the
rate of opioid-related deaths. Samantha Harris and coauthors find that
in 2016 only 13.8 percent of substance use disorder treatment programs
accepted Medicare and provided medication approved by the Food and Drug
Administration to treat opioid use disorder, compared to 24.8 percent
that accepted Medicaid and 28.6 percent that accepted private insurance.
