AEE Reacts to Indiana House Vote for Coal Bill ([link removed] )

AEE reacted to Indiana’s House passage of HB1414, a bill that would require Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC) approval before a utility can close a coal plant and offer more money for keeping a 90-day supply of coal onsite. The vote was 52-41. As coal plants are expected to close as they become uncompetitive with more cost-effective advanced energy resources, including wind, solar, storage, and demand-side resources, coal companies are pressuring the legislature to pass a bill that would make it harder for utilities to transition to cleaner energy resources. "HB 1414 is a bad deal for Indiana businesses and consumers. It interferes with free market competition and it will cost Hoosiers more for electricity," said Caryl Auslander, policy director at Advanced Energy Economy. Virginia Clean Economy Act Advances from Key Subcommittee ([link removed] )

VA Clean Economy - AEE Blog-2x ([link removed] ) Following an important subcommittee hearing, environmental and clean energy groups joined in praising members of the House of Delegates for taking bold and meaningful action to address climate change and transform Virginia’s energy economy. On February 4th, Delegate Rip Sullivan’s Subcommittee of the House Labor & Commerce Committee met and voted to advance HB 1526, the Virginia Clean Economy ACT (VCEA). Introduced in December with the backing of a broad coalition of groups from around Virginia, the VCEA, of which Del. Sullivan is a chief co-patron, would address climate change in the Commonwealth by requiring that 100% of our power come from clean sources and eliminating utility pollution by 2050. The VCEA would accomplish this making major investments in energy efficiency and ensuring that the transition to a 100% clean energy economy doesn’t hurt ratepayers. We didn’t realize it would be a Super Bowl preview of sorts, given big ad buys touting hot new EV models from Audi, General Motors, and Porsche. Texas Advanced Energy Business Alliance (TAEBA) recently released a new report that shows electricity customers across the

state could save $5.47 billion by using distributed energy resources (DERs) like solar energy, energy storage, efficiency, and electric vehicles to reduce the need for more costly peak power generation and transmission and distribution investments. The report quantifies the value of integrating DERs into transmission and distribution planning and allowing them to participate in existing wholesale markets.
