Our Summer Reading Challenge is back and we need your help to make it successful!
We are looking for volunteers who are enthusiastic about engaging children with reading and to help us deliver our exciting summer events and activities programme.
What is the Summer Reading Challenge? An annual reading promotion for children, this year’s Challenge theme is ‘Ready, Set, Read!’ We challenge all children to read 6 books over the holidays giving out prizes and stickers along the way. Rewards also include a medal ceremony and a certificate if they complete the challenge.
This is a fantastic opportunity to encourage young people to enjoy the 2023 Summer Reading Challenge in libraries across Nottingham.
Anyone over 14+ can apply and a DBS check may be required for volunteers aged 16+.

The Chai Experience was a social heritage project celebrating the influence and journeys of Nottingham’s South Asian communities. Funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the project was run by Nottingham City Libraries.
Launched in 2019 and completed in April 2023, we have been privileged to capture the memories of members of the South Asian community who came to Nottingham in the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s, through a series of activities, workshops and community events.
During the project we heard moving stories of how and why people came to Nottingham and details from their lives since they arrived. We now have 12 personal story films, along with a highlights film which give a glimpse into the experiences of our South Asian community, highlighting the variety of their experience, as well as capturing life in Nottingham during the 1950s, ‘60s, and ‘70s.

The materials gathered during the project will be added to the Nottingham Local Studies Library collections, ensuring they are available for future generations, with school packs and reminiscence packs soon to be created.
And throughout the project, the experience of drinking Chai (tea) together broke down barriers and brought people together. Chai has been the connecting social experience encouraging people to share stories, information and experiences and we thank you for sharing them with us.

Wollaton Library
We’re marking Dementia Action Week with a coffee morning at Wollaton Library - anyone living with dementia, or supporting someone with dementia in a family or professional context is invited to join us to explore our resources and services for those living with dementia, including memory packs, our Reading Well collection and reminiscence tools such as our photographic archive, plus the opportunity to get information about local support from the Alzheimer’s Society.
We’ll also be highlighting the new local hub for our Home Library Service which takes books to those who can’t get to the library due to health, limited mobility or caring responsibilities.
Drop in any time between 10am to 12pm for a cup of tea or coffee in a relaxed atmosphere and to have a look at the various resources on offer.
