Friend,
Along the dangerous migration route between Central America and the United States, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) teams provide medical humanitarian care to people often escaping violent and deadly circumstances.
Cruel migration policies designed to curb asylum access along the southern US border are putting people’s lives at risk, including a new proposed rule from the Biden administration that would gut asylum protections and hurt vulnerable people. Inhumane migration policies only add to the abuse, chaos, and confusion asylum seekers and migrants face. Friend, do you believe in safe, humane migration policies and want to learn more about this important issue?
"I left Honduras because of the maras," one MSF patient who fled to Mexico shared with us. She fled after gangs beat up her son and hopes to find safety far from home. "This is the first day in the shelter and I am not fine. I am sick, I have a cough."
During 2022, MSF provided close to 45,000 primary health consultations in Mexico—including to migrants and asylum seekers suffering from illness induced or aggravated by conditions they faced in transit or while stranded.
Leaving your home and livelihood behind is an incredibly difficult decision. There are many factors that drive migration in the Americas, but most of the people we treat have been displaced by extreme circumstances. Harmful migration policies have turned away millions of people at the southern US border. As a result, they are stuck in border cities or forced to return to dangerous conditions back at home.
