Hi John
We’ve finally had a decision on the future of State Highway 25A,
but the tentative reopening date of early 2024 will anger and
frustrate many locals.
I don’t think Wellington fully
understands the difficulties our region is experiencing because of the
closure of SH25A. Not only are residents and businesses facing longer
travel times and higher expenses, but also, in the eyes of many
potential visitors, the Coromandel is closed.
This situation
would be challenging for people to navigate at the best of times, but
combined with an ongoing cost of living crisis, we are reaching
breaking point.
Financial support has been given to some
businesses and more is being made available, but there is growing
frustration about how the fund has been distributed. The process has
not been transparent and those who have missed out are calling for
future assistance.
I’ll continue to advocate for the Coromandel
to get its fair share of these support packages and I’ll keep pushing
this government to show more urgency to get SH25A reopened
pre-Christmas.
This week the Government will announce their
Budget, which will affect those in the Coromandel and the rest of the
country. Everyone will be looking for less wasteful spending and a
better pathway to growing the economy which delivers higher incomes to
Kiwis.
New Zealanders deserve a government which treats their
taxpayer dollars with respect.
Kind regards
