It’s Mother’s Day, and I want to take a moment to tell you about my Mama, Frances.
My Mama has always been my inspiration, especially on this day.
As an example, last weekend my mom received her honorary doctorate of public service for 50 years of work at Roper St. Francis, helping single mothers in Charleston.
I figured most people in the crowd probably just saw a sweet, older lady walking up on stage to receive a piece of paper. But I saw something very different because I knew everything my mom had been through just to be standing there.
I saw a woman who, after my parents divorced, had to start over from the bottom, and through sheer grit managed to provide a good life for my brother and me.
I saw a woman who worked her tail off, most nights late into the evening, but still made sure her sons knew she was there for them and loved them.
I saw a woman who could have retired years ago, but kept working because it was a privilege and a joy to make a difference in someone’s life.
Growing up, there wasn’t always enough food on the table, the lights weren’t always on, and the phone wasn’t always connected.
But in that same house we were always rich with laughter, love, and dreams. In that house, anything was possible, so long as we never stopped moving forward, we never gave up, and we never stopped praying.
It was my mom’s sacrifice and unconditional love that forged me into the man I am today. She has always been my greatest champion.
When I saw her receiving her honorary doctorate, my heart nearly burst with joy. I was reminded of something my grandaddy used to say.
“Did you know you can light up an entire dark room with one small candle?” The darkness isn’t as powerful as you thought it was. All it took was the smallest of lights to change the room.
For him and my grandmother, my mom and the rest of their children were that light.
And that’s what I see when I look at her. She is my light, my source of strength.
Had it not been for her, I would not be where I am today!
And I know there are so many other women out there who have been amazing mothers or motherly figures to others.
I want to wish all mothers a very happy Mother’s Day today!
I hope you and your family are able to enjoy a day of peace, relaxation, and happy reflection.
