This is a historic moment — and we couldn’t have gotten this far without you!

We just made history in Virginia, Friend!

Today, both houses of the Virginia General Assembly officially passed the Virginia Values Act — a comprehensive bill that provides non-discrimination protections for LGBTQ people and expands protections for all Virginians — and it will head to the governor for his signature later this month.

When this bill becomes law, Virginia will be the first state in the south to have non-discrimination protections for LGBTQ people … the first state in over a decade to add sexual orientation and gender identity to existing non-discrimination law … and the first state since 1993 to add a prohibition on discrimination in public accommodations (protecting all Virginians) where none existed before.

This is a historic moment — and we couldn’t have gotten this far without you!

Wins like this show the power we have when we work together and fight. And we'll need more power than ever as we push forward other pro-equality legislation and combat negative bills like the ones we're seeing right now in states like South Dakota and Tennessee — unnecessary, hateful bills targeting the most vulnerable among us and we need you with us in order to stop them.

Will you chip in and help power our work even more across the country?

Last year, HRC made a six-figure investment in Virginia’s state legislative elections to mobilize the 1.2 million Equality Voters in Virginia. HRC volunteers like you knocked on over 13,500 doors in priority areas, made over 10,000 calls and sent thousands of texts to turn out voters — while 10 staff were deployed across the Commonwealth to work in key districts.

Alongside Equality Virginia and local advocates on the ground, we helped flip both chambers of Virginia’s General Assembly and opened up the door to the progress we’re seeing today. All while HRC members and supporters — like you — completed thousands of actions statewide!

I am so proud of what we’ve done in Virginia. But our work isn’t over.

State legislatures across the country are still in session and, in the weeks ahead, we’ll be fighting coast to coast to pass pro-LGBTQ bills and stop anti-LGBTQ legislation from becoming law. At the same time, our 2020 electoral work is ramping up to ensure we maintain a pro-equality U.S. House majority, make gains in the U.S. Senate, elect a pro-equality president, and set us up to achieve full legal equality at the federal level by passing the Equality Act in 2021.

With this much on the line, I hope you'll be inspired and make a small gift to HRC now to fuel the work ahead. Thank you as always for all you do!

Onward,
