Applications are now being accepted for the 2020 session of SUMMA Theological Debate Camp!

Join us this summer at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee for SUMMA Theological Debate Camp. There's no better place to enjoy the great outdoors, make new friends, and explore life's biggest questions!

SUMMA welcomes campers from all backgrounds and faith traditions. Camp is open to high school students entering grades 9–12 in the fall of 2020 who are interested in:

  • Developing critical thinking, leadership, and communication skills for college and career;
  • Engaging with their personal faith in a meaningful way;
  • Meeting new people and forming lasting friendships;
  • Worshiping and praying in the Episcopal tradition.

SUMMA campers attend theology lectures and seminars led by clergy and University professors that broaden understanding of the Christian faith tradition and its enduring relevance in our lives today. They work in small groups to form debate arguments and engage in stimulating discussions that hone critical-thinking and analytical skills. During the end-of-camp debate tournament, each camper argues the affirmative and negative positions of a debate resolution.

Past resolutions have included:

  • Civil disobedience is morally justified;
  • Churches should be gun-free zones;
  • Christians, Muslims, and Jews all worship the same God;
  • Outside the Church there is no salvation.

Each day at SUMMA Camp begins and ends in the beautiful Chapel of the Apostles at the School of Theology. Between seminars and discussions, campers enjoy fun activities like hiking, sports, music, arts and crafts, and much more.

SUMMA Theological Debate Camp gives students the confidence to speak their truth in love, and to live their faith more deeply!
