Hi,
Today is Mother’s Day, and I wanted to write a quick note.
I grew up one of 5 — two brothers and two sisters. My mom raised us, and she showed her love in a lot of big ways, like getting up early every day to go to work as a school nurse and pay the bills. But there are a lot of smaller things that stick with me too.
Every time she helped me with homework, or drove me to basketball practice, she told me over and over again in a thousand little ways — I could do anything I set my mind to.
When I was a girl, I dreamed about playing basketball. Looking back, I was a 5’4’’ kid in a time when Title IX was still new. There was no WNBA. My dream was a pretty crazy one. But my mom paid no attention to the odds.
She chose, in spite of all of it, to take me to practice, to buy me shoes to play in, to sell her wedding ring to pave the court behind our house. Despite the big barriers, she believed in me. So I believed in me, too.
So when I grew up, I guess that’s why it’s never surprised me that wherever the challenges are great, there are moms - at picket lines, at food banks, in the classroom, in hospitals during the darkest days of COVID.
My mom taught me that there is strength in kindness. She showed me that if you believe in yourself, you can be anything you want to be.
To all the moms out there, thank you for the big things you do, but thank you for the little ones too. You deserve every bit of celebration and love.
Thank you for inspiring me every day.
