I'm so proud of Summer.
Hi John,
It's nice to meet you. I'm Shelda, Summer's mom.
I wanted to reach out to you on Mother's Day to share why I'm so proud to be Summer's mom. And for those for whom this holiday is a painful day, my heart goes out to you. ♥️
As Summer's mom, here's what I know to be true — she will always be vocal about what's right, even if it means questioning authority.
In high school, she led her fellow ninth graders in a protest against the Pledge of Allegiance and argued with a substitute teacher about Christopher Columbus' role in history.
I remember how she moved back in with me after graduating from Howard Law. She was trying to figure out what came next when a video surfaced showing officials in her old school district using a stun gun on Black students. She got up from the couch and led a successful campaign to unseat school board members who failed to respond.
From there, she never slowed down. Whether it was her election to the State House or Congress, there have been doubters — not to mention nasty attacks — but Summer has always stayed true to herself and her progressive vision for justice.
I'm so proud of my daughter's instinct to always fight for those without power. It's what makes her a kind, generous, and fierce advocate for PA-12 as our Congresswoman.
Summer's gotten right to work in Congress, delivering on campaign promises like co-sponsoring the Green New Deal and standing up to white supremacist super-villains on the Oversight Committee. But if we're going to transform our political system to deliver for everyday families, we can't stop now.
So please, if you can, will you chip in today to power Summer's fight for folks like us? I know it means so much to her to have this movement giving their full support.
