Dear John,
An essential part of creating a sustainable economy is ensuring a just transition—one that respects the rights of workers and communities across the globe. Ensuring the well-being of the workers who stitch our garments, harvest our coffee beans, install renewable energy, and assemble our electronics requires companies and investors to proactively engage with and understand how massive changes in technology, new business models, and, of course, climate change will exacerbate known risks.
Ceres 2020 in New York will bring together investors, companies and other capital market leaders to discuss the role they have in ensuring equitable workplaces across sectors, along with many other sustainability topics. |
Reimagining Capitalism in a World on Fire |
|
|
|
Free market capitalism is one of humanity's greatest inventions and the greatest source of prosperity the world has ever seen. But this success has been costly. Capitalism is on the verge of destroying the planet and destabilizing society as wealth rushes to the top. The time for action is running short. In this plenary session, participants will:
-
Examine the worldview that the only purpose of business is to make money and maximize shareholder value
-
Reimagine capitalism so that it is not only an engine of prosperity but also a system that is in harmony with environmental realities, striving for social justice and the demands of truly democratic institutions
-
Explore a pragmatic foundation for navigating a world faced with an unprecedented challenge, but also with extraordinary opportunity for those who can get it right

|
|
|
Let’s breakdown the buzzword: “just transition” that means a lot of things to a lot of people. So how should companies implement strategies to take advantage of disruptive forces and innovation while protecting the dignity and rights of those who may be negatively affected? In this session, participants will:
-
Explore the major economic and social trends that are shifting the nature of work in the US and globally
-
Evaluate how businesses can and should innovate to address impacts on workers
-
Identify the key partnerships and collaborations that are necessary to realize a just transition

Moving Beyond the ‘E’: Workforce Reporting and Human Rights, What Investors Want to Know |
|
| |
Unlike the ‘E’ of ESG, the disclosure and standardization of social and workforce data has traditionally been seen as a laggard in the space. Although many business leaders tout that “our people are our greatest asset” there is virtually no reporting on how that asset is being cultivated. The Workforce Disclosure Initiative seeks to address this gap, whilst engaging companies and investors on topics that are both salient human rights and material workforce issues. Participants in the session will:
-
Hear directly from investors about why social reporting is important and how they are using the WDI data
-
Explore the methodology and results of the Workforce Disclosure Initiative's 2019 cycle
-
Discuss the challenges and opportunities associated with collecting workforce data and how best to engage key internal and external stakeholders on workforce issues
