KEEPING UP WITH CONGRESS House Passes Landmark Border Security Legislation This week, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 2, the Secure the Border Act of 2023. This legislation is a response to the record-breaking border crisis under the current administration's policies and focuses on mitigating and stopping the unprecedented surge of migrants and illegal drugs flowing across the U.S.-Mexico border. H.R. 2 would mandate completion of the border wall - including not just physical barriers but also technology - bolster Border Patrol staffing, and strengthen & streamline the asylum process. Andrew was proud to help craft this legislation in part with his colleagues on the Homeland Security Committee in order to address national security concerns related to the border crisis, as well as the fentanyl and humanitarian crises. Andrew Supports Bill To Expand Employment Opportunities For Military Spouses Andrew became a cosponsor of H.R.1277, the Military Spouse Hiring Act. This legislation expands the Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) to include the hiring of a qualified military spouse, who face a staggering unemployment rate of almost 20%. The WOTC encourages the hiring of individuals who are members of a targeted group by allowing employers to claim a tax credit equal to a portion of the wages paid to those qualified individuals.
