John,

While on opposite ends of the Earth, the North and South poles are deeply connected. And now, new research published in Nature shows that previously unknown interdependence with the two poles has the potential to accelerate climate change.

Here’s the science behind it: The Arctic and the Antarctic transport warm and cold water back and forth through deep ocean currents. But thanks to researchers at Oregon State University studying ice cores from over 17,000 years ago, we’re beginning to see an atmospheric component in play as well. As one of the OSU climate scientists put it:

“If you warm or cool one part of the planet, you know that the heat has to go somewhere, and it has to come from somewhere, so it’s a balancing act.”

That balancing act is getting tougher to maintain, John. Climate change is exacerbating our polar ice sheets, slowly chipping them away and causing sea levels to rise.

Our planet has seen this before. When ice sheets rapidly melted into the Atlantic 17,000 years ago, rising sea levels created disastrous floods, droughts, and severe weather patterns around the world. And we could see this all again if we don’t stop climate change before it’s too late.

This new research highlights the dire need for climate advocates like our SEEC Members in Congress. They know that if we don’t take action now, we could all be collateral. Will you join their fight to take bold action against our climate crisis by pitching in any amount today?

Thanks to your help in 2022, SEEC PAC was able to re-elect over 95% of our pro-environment members to the U.S. House of Representatives — defying the odds on a night where Democrats lost seats. Now we are counting on you to help our SEEC members pass climate, clean energy and environmental justice policies in the 118th Congress while we continue fighting for a sustainable future.
